There is an especially rewritten Indian edition of the Springboard workbook and an active
network of trainers in India.
'I am very impressed that a programme
which is of international relevance and helps in empowering women, has been developed. I
commend all women who have attended Springboard programmes for taking this first and
confident step to take responsibility for their own lives, careers and future.' Dr Najma Heptulla, Deputy Chairperson, Rajya
Sabha

A significant women's development project
is on-going, sponsored by The British Council, The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the
Bureau of Police Research and Development.
Following an event run by Jenny Daisley
for 23 women in the police, 8 senior women were trained to become licensed Springboard
trainers in February 2000 at the National Police Academy in Hyderabad.
These 8 trainers have been running
Springboard programmes in the States of Punjab, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh,
Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir and Karnataka. Over 1,000 women from different
levels in the police, have used the programme; Constables, Head Constables, Sub Inspectors
and Inspectors. There is a special edition of the Springboard workbook adapted by Dr Veena
Sethi for the Indian police, available in 5 languages: Hindi, Maharat, Telegu, Punjabi and
English.
The Springboard work with women in the
police is sponsored by The British Council, The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the
Bureau of Police Research and Development and has been supported throughout by Dr Kiran
Bedi, Joint Commissioner of Police, IPS.

Following the huge success of the
Springboard Women's Development programmes in the police, four regional conferences were
organised by and for women in the police, with guidance and training from Jenny
Daisley to enable them to organise and facilitate such ground-breaking events.
This was the first time ever that women had officially convened to discuss issues for
women in the police.
From the success of these regional
conferences came the first-ever National Conference for Women in Police, attended by 200
women, held in Delhi on February 19-21 2002 and chaired by Dr Kiran Bedi, Joint
Commissioner of Police, IPS and the most senior woman in the police in India. Jenny
Daisley again advised the conference steering group and was a keynote speaker at the
conference. In the run up to the conference a survey was conducted on the perceptions and
attitudes of women in the police.
The conference made several
recommendations, including setting up a permanent forum for women in the police,
introducing the Springboard Women's Development programme more widely throughout India and
introducing good Equal Opportunities practice into the police.
As a result, four senior women officers,
(Rina Mitra IPS, Director, Vigilance Railway Board, V. Neeraja IPS, Senior Superintendant
of Police, Anita Punj IPS, Superintendant of Police and Malini Agarwal IPS, Superintendant
of Police) travelled to the UK to be trained by us in various aspects of Equal
Opportunities and to learn from a study tour of good practice organisations in the UK.
They are now running Equal Opportunity Awareness seminars for the police in India.
A second National Conference is now being
planned.

'I can confidently say that each
Springboard programme will make a difference in the life of every woman who attends it,
and together, women will give the police service the healing touch that it is so much in
need of.' Dr Kiran Bedi, Joint
Commissioner of Police, Delhi Police.
